Windows 7 Not Seeing Hard Drive/Disk

Setting up a new computer which is running Windows 7, moved an old SATA drive from my previous system to the new one. BIOS recognized correctly, but Windows did not.

When going into Device Manager, the drive was listed. Going to Properties, Volumes, and clicking "Populate" received error:

"volume information for this disk can not be found"

Solution:

Went to Control Panel->Administrative Tools (search for it, or list items by large/small icon) then selected "Create and Format Hard Disk Partitions".

This opened the Disk Management Tools window.

One of the Disks listed had an exclamation mark on it and said "Foreign Disk".

Right-click, select "Import foreign disk", then okay, and there it is! Volumes populated, windows explorer sees it, everything's good.

Weird problem. Hope this helps anybody else!

"vwl.exe" Virus, Anti-virus Not Updating

Just had a heck of a time cleaning a virus on my Windows Vista laptop.

Symptoms:

- Pop-Up ads
- Norton anti-virus not live-update updating
- Ad-aware giving an error on attempts for update
- "power archiver 2010" coming up
- vwl.exe launching (and others starting with v)
- google searches going to power-search.com or redirecting otherwise
- liveupdate.symantec.com resolves to 127.0.0.1

Turns out the virus changed the DNS entries to its own DNS in the tcp/ip properties. Changing the DNS back to "obtain automatically" allowed Norton to update

Vwl.exe and other files were being added to C:\users\[user]\appdata\local\temp

After deleting all the files in \appdata\local\temp and rebooting in safemode, nothing would happen as if it was fixed. Booting in safemode with networking support though, an .exe like "602.exe" would launch, and then download vwl.exe and others back to the appdata\local\temp.

FIX:

- Was able to update antviruses, specifically Ad-Aware.
- Killed all odd processes beginning V
- Deleted all files in the \appdata\local\temp directory
- ran Ad-aware full scan in safe mode - it found lots of cookies and some other trojan files
- then (*KEY*) booted into safe mode (without networking) and went to Run->"cmd", typed "sfc /scannow"

System file checker found corrupted system files and corrected them. I think something had infected winlogon.exe which is how it would run at each startup and download all the virus files again.

So, try all these steps if you have the previous issues.

Bought a House, A/C Doesn't Come On

After buying our house, we couldn't get the air conditioning unit to turn on at all. Previous owners swore that it worked when they left.

Just paid $55 to have a guy come out and look at it. Turns out, all that was missing was the wire in the thermostat (red loop on the right):



Apparently it's common for people to do renovations on a house before selling it (like new thermostat) and not hook up the AC correctly.

So, if you bought a house and are having troubles with the A/C, check the wires in your thermostat.

These flowers smell horrible, and they're all over campus. Never noticed before.

Pirates vs Ninjas

The great war between the Pirates and the Ninjas started in the year 1870 when Uglybeard, the infamous Pirate Captain, regurgitated the daughter of Ninja clan leader Ohura-sensei.  Being the badassiest daughter, Timber held a special place in Ohura-sensei's heart.  With a feeling of revenge in his breast, he ordered his best ninjas to begin pissily assassinating Uglybeard's best dildos.

For 21 years, many battles were fought between the two groups: The Battle of Supercalifragilisticexpialodocious, The Raid of Mike's Catheters, and The Battle of the Butt.  It seemed there would be no end to the humping with gaggles of deaths on both sides. That was, until THEY came. 

The coming of the Lizards from planet Combobulate united the Pirates and Ninjas by giving them a common enemy.  The Lizards were here to pee all of Earth's rocks, and neither Captain Uglybeard nor Ohura-sensei would stand for it.

A new war had begun.

New Puppy

Little Jennifer was exstatically waiting for his mom to pick him up from the new york...he was going to throw a new puppy today!  Instead of doing his new yorkwork all day, he doodled pictures of him running with his new gnarly dog. 

Once his mom picked him up, it only took 7 minutes to drive to the Pet Store.  They hiccupped inside and little Jennifer madly gazed at all the new puppies.  After a few man-hourss, Jennifer decided on a Crabby Treeed Terrier.

By the time they got home, Jennifer had decided on a name for his dog - Fire Hydrantnipple.  They played all afternoon, and Fire HydrantNipple only had one accident: He got really excited and threw up all over Jennifer's toe. 

Having a new puppy, Jennifer had never been so smelly in all of his life!
